Laptop buying guide: 7 Things to look for in 2022

When it comes to buying a laptop, there are a lot of factors to consider. From hardware and performance to design and price, it’s important to make an informed decision to ensure you get the best laptop for your needs. If you’re in the market for a new laptop in 2022, here’s what to look for:

1. Processor

The processor (also known as the CPU) is the brain of your laptop and plays a major role in its overall performance. When it comes to processors, you’ll want to choose one that’s powerful enough to handle your workload.

For basic tasks like web browsing and word processing, an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor should suffice.

If you need something more powerful for tasks like video editing or gaming, you’ll want to look for a laptop with an Intel Core i7 or i9 processor.

2. Memory

Memory, also known as RAM, is responsible for allowing your laptop to multitask effectively. The more RAM your laptop has, the more programs and files it can handle at once.

For most users, 8GB of RAM should be enough, but if you’re a heavy multitasker or need to run resource-intensive programs, you may want to consider a laptop with 16GB or more of RAM.

3. Storage

Storage is where you keep all of your files, programs, and operating system. Laptops typically come with either a hard drive (HDD) or a solid-state drive (SSD). HDDs are cheaper and offer more storage space, but they are slower and not as durable as SSDs. SSDs, on the other hand, are faster and more durable but typically have less storage space and are more expensive.

If you need a lot of storage and don’t mind slower performance, an HDD might be a good choice. If you need fast performance and don’t need a lot of storage, an SSD might be a better option.

4. Display:

The display is an important factor to consider when buying a laptop, especially if you plan on using it for tasks like photo and video editing, or if you just want a high-quality viewing experience. Look for a laptop with a high-resolution display (at least 1080p) and a good color gamut for accurate and vibrant colors.

If you plan on using your laptop for gaming or watching movies, consider a laptop with a high refresh rate (at least 60Hz) for smooth and fluid visuals.

5. Portability

If you plan on using your laptop on the go, portability is an important factor to consider. Laptops come in a range of sizes and weights, so choose one that’s easy to carry around.

If you need a laptop that’s ultra-portable, consider a lightweight laptop with a 13-inch or 14-inch display. If you don’t mind a larger laptop and want more screen real estate, you might prefer a 15-inch or 17-inch model.

6. Battery life

If you plan on using your laptop on the go, you’ll want to consider its battery life. Look for a laptop with a long-lasting battery that can last at least 6-8 hours on a single charge. If you need a laptop that can last all day, consider one with a battery life of 8 hours or more.

7. Graphics

If you plan on using your laptop for tasks like video editing, gaming, or graphic design, you’ll want to consider its graphics capabilities. Laptops come with integrated graphics, which are sufficient for basic tasks, or dedicated graphics, which are more powerful and better suited for resource-intensive tasks. If you need a laptop with good graphics performance, look for one with a dedicated graphics card from Nvidia or any other reputable brand.
